Dubai - again

This morning Nick and I went to the souks (spice, perfume, and gold) only to find out on Fridays, everything is closed. Grrrrrrrrr. There were a few places opened, so I was able to do a little shopping for a few things that are hard to get back home...like Frankincense and Myrrh and sandalwood.

Last time we were here, we ate street food (below) which was amazing. This time we went to a restaurant with an outdoor eating area, and while the food was so so - and pricy - our drinks were amazing. The first was a refreshing Rose water drink with shaved cucumber. I am definitely going to make that one next summer...very cooling. Next I had pomegranate juice - also good, and last we had milk ginger. Hot milk boiled with ginger and sugar...very yummy!

Also, the last time we were here we went on the metro to the large Dubai mall. In the centre they had a huge fish tank...a full aquarium with all kids of fish, coral and even sharks. Unfortunately, nothing I could swim with!

This time we are staying at a heritage guest house. It is a very old building - next to a heritage museum and old school. The place is charming and has very old doors and locks.

While we were at the souk Nick finally succumbed to a salesman who insisted on putting a scarf on his head. Salesmen are of course, everywhere in the souks...calling you into their shop. They sell all kinds of cool things, though I have seen them all before in other souks - mainly the one in Istanbul. In fact, the spice souk there was way more impressive.

While we were strolling the streets, the call to prayer went out, and most of the men on the street took out their prayer matts and knelt down toward Mecca. You can see them lined up on the sidewalk across the street (behind Nick).

Below is a picture of the atrium of our guesthouse. The house is built like a Spanish hacienda, with rooms around the outside and an open air inner courtyard where you can sit.

Tomorrow, Nick and I separate...he heads off to Tanznia, and I go to Paris where I will take a foodie tour of a few markets, and some cheese shops :-)While I am looking forward to that, I am really just anxious to get home.
