I am going to post a video on Facebook, so be sure to watch it...pretty amazing.
The whale sharks - there were five - were varied sizes, ranging from maybe 8 feet to 20 feet long. The largest had a mouth that was about two feet in diameter. Basically, the sharks suck huge amounts of water into their mouths and strain out the krill and plankton. People are supposed to stay 12 feet away from the sharks, but it was near impossible as the sharks kept coming towards us. You will notice in the video a few times when I scream and the video goes all blurry...that was me scrambling to try to get out of the way. I would be busy filming one, and another would swim right beneath me, or beside me. At one point I accidentally kicked out with my foot. Being so close to something so large was pretty incredible...and seeing the power of their water suction was very cool. They created such a water intake suction, that it literally pulled me towards its mouth as I was filming.
After the whale sharks, we drove back to Cebu City. I had a rough night due to roosters...I swear, I have never in my life been so tormented by chickens! Our bamboo hut shared a wall with a chicken coop, and the bloody things started blasting away at 1 am...I wanted to go out there and choke the damn things...it was brutal! Needless to say, I needed a nap, so we checked in early and I slept for an hour. Then we went to the nearby mall and went to the cinema....watched a stupid violent movie that seemed to make Nikki quite happy (argghhh). Afterwards we took a taxi to a nearby restaurant. The traffic was so pathetic, we literally sat in the same spot for 15 minutes....6 cars all trying to turn into the same two lanes tends to slow things up. I really wonder at what point in a civilization's evolution do they figure out advance green signals...or even traffic lights. Along the way we were approached by many street children asking for money. They would stand pathetically at the car window putting their hands to their mouths pantomiming eating. The government here, and rightly so, discourage people from giving to the street children. The parents send the children to beg, instead of to school, because they can feed their drug habits that way. The Catholic people here struggle with that, wanting to give alms to earn their way to heaven. Unfortunately, it really does not help the children - only promotes begging.
The Korean restaurant was recommended to us by Steve in Molboal, but it was not that great. Two of the dishes had hairs in them (so gross). That killed my appetite.
Anyway, below are a few random pics of Moalboal and Oslob.
